Cambria Heights has some of the most interesting roofs in Queens. Most of the neighborhood was built in the late 1920s and 1930s, and a lot of it is brick Tudors and Colonials, plus rows of Storybook-style Tudor houses with steep, rolled roof lines and colored slate or terra-cotta on top. Two of those blocks are now city historic districts. I'm Stavros Latos, the owner of REVMA Roofing, and I come to every estimate myself, so you're not explaining your house to a salesman.
Cambria Heights Blocks We Serve Every Week
We work all over Cambria Heights, from Springfield Boulevard and Francis Lewis Boulevard east to the Cross Island Parkway and the Nassau line at Elmont, and from 114th Avenue down past Linden Boulevard to Montefiore Cemetery. That includes the historic blocks on 222nd Street and 227th Street. It's all ZIP code 11411, with Queens Village, Saint Albans and Laurelton right around it.
A lot of Cambria Heights houses are attached or semi-attached, so your roof meets your neighbor's. We talk to them before tear-off, and we plan where the container goes on blocks where the driveways are shared.
What Actually Damages Cambria Heights Roofs
These roofs are close to a hundred years old, and on the Storybook houses the shapes are complicated: steep pitches, jerkinhead gables where the peak is clipped off, curved eaves and lots of chimneys. Every one of those is a spot where flashing ages out. On slate and terra-cotta, the material itself often holds up for a long time, and it's the metal and the fasteners that let water in.
On the attached rows, the weak spot is where one house's roof meets the next. If your neighbor redid their roof and nobody tied the two together right, water gets in at the seam. Add the street trees dropping leaves into the valleys, freeze and thaw every winter, and wind off the open ground along the Cross Island, and you can see why we look at the whole roof, not just the leak.
Insurance Claims in Cambria Heights: How We Approach Them
If a storm breaks slate, takes shingles off or drops a limb on the roof, we document the damage with photos, we meet the adjuster on the roof, and we repair what's covered. We're the roofing contractor, so we don't negotiate your claim or speak for you with the carrier. Under New York Insurance Law §2101(g)(2), that's for you or a licensed public adjuster.
We file for storm damage, not wear. If the roof is just old, I'll tell you and give you one price for the replacement.
222nd Street, 227th Street and Linden Boulevard: A Few Specifics
On 222nd Street, between 115th Road and 116th Avenue, there are 46 Tudor Revival and Storybook row houses with terra-cotta roofs. On 227th Street, between 116th Avenue and Linden Boulevard, there are 50 more, with jerkinhead roofs and colored slate with ragged edges. The Landmarks Preservation Commission designated both blocks as historic districts in 2022, so roof work there needs an LPC permit first, and original roofing you can see from the street generally gets replaced in kind. Along Linden Boulevard, the houses are mostly detached brick Tudors and Colonials, where a shingle roof with good valleys and new chimney flashing is the usual job.
Cambria Heights Roofing FAQ
My house is on 222nd or 227th Street. Do I need landmarks approval for a new roof?
Yes. Both blocks became LPC historic districts in 2022, so roof work needs an LPC permit before it starts. If your original slate or terra-cotta is visible from the street, expect to replace it in kind.
Can you keep the colored slate on my Storybook house?
Sound slate can often be kept and reinstalled. Cracked or broken pieces can't be reused by city rule, so we replace them, match the color as close as we can and redo the flashing.
Do I need a DOB permit for a roof in Cambria Heights?
Under 1 RCNY §101-14, replacing coverings and insulation above the deck doesn't need a DOB permit unless the Energy Code requires added insulation. Replacing deck or sheathing does, and when it does, we file it with DOB Queens.
How much does a new roof cost in Cambria Heights?
It depends on size, material, how complicated the roof is and whether LPC applies. Our Queens roof cost guide explains it, and you get one written price after I've seen your roof.
My row house shares a roof line. Will my neighbor's roof be affected?
We tie your new roof into theirs properly at the shared line and tell them before we start, so the seam is sealed and nobody's surprised.
Tudor, Slate and Tile Roofing in Cambria Heights
Cambria Heights roofs reward patience. On slate, we keep what's sound, replace what's broken and redo the flashing. On terra-cotta, we check the underlayment and fasteners before anyone talks about tearing off tile. On the brick Tudors outside the districts, architectural shingles or composite slate get you a clean, durable roof that fits the house. See our slate roofing, composite roofing and shingle roofing pages.
