Composite Slate vs Composite Shake in Queens

Composite slate copies the flat, straight lines of natural slate and works on Tudors, Colonials and anywhere slate used to be. Composite shake copies the thick, textured butts of cedar and looks right on shingle-style houses in Douglaston and Little Neck. Both last 40 to 50 years, both are lighter than what they imitate, and both look different product to product, which is why I bring samples.

Composite holds up well to impact, but a heavy limb can still crack tiles. We photograph and measure the damage, and I'll meet your adjuster on the roof. Then we repair what the carrier covers with matching tiles. We don't negotiate your claim or act as your adjuster.

Keep a few spare tiles from the install. Matching color years later is easier when you already have them.

Attached, Semi-Attached and Two-Family Homes

On attached and semi-attached houses, composite has to meet whatever the neighbor has. We flash the transition so the two roofs shed water as one, and we tell the neighbor before tear-off.

Composite is lighter than slate, which matters on older two-family houses where nobody's sure what the framing has been through.
