Step Flashing

Step Flashing is a type of flashing used where a sloped roof meets a vertical wall, such as around chimneys or along the sides of dormers. It consists of small pieces of aluminum or copper and is installed in layers, or “steps,” between each row of shingles and up against the wall. This layered method helps direct water down and away from the wall, preventing it from seeping behind the exterior facade. Using high-quality materials like copper or good-grade aluminum is important because step flashing is exposed to harsh weather, temperature changes, and moisture over time.

Copper and kynar-coated aluminum are very durable, resist corrosion, and can last for decades without needing to be replaced. Poor-quality flashing can fail, leading to leaks, water damage, mold, and costly repairs. Step flashing plays a key role in keeping your roof and walls dry, making it a critical part of any well-built roofing system.
